10 Common Beginner Mistakes To Avoid In HUNGER! Beginner Guide (2026)

HUNGER is a massive game where every decision matters, and even small mistakes can cost you valuable loot, resources, and slow down your progression.

Hi guys, Rex here, and today we’re going over 10 of the most common beginner mistakes new player make in HUNGER.

Some of these are easy to avoid, while others completely change the way you approach the game once you understand them.

So without further ado, let’s dive into it!

1. Letting Gear Fear Control You

One of the most common beginner mistakes in any extraction game is getting too attached to the loot you acquire, usually referred to as gear fear.

You find a powerful weapon, a rare piece of armor, or some expensive equipment, successfully bring it out of an expedition — and then it sits in your stash forever because you’re afraid of losing it.

The problem with this is two-fold.

First, by never using your better equipment, you miss out on valuable practice and experience that could improve your future gameplay.

Second, you actually lower your chances of surviving out of fear of losing. Which is a bit ironic when you think about it.

Good players understand when bringing better gear increases their odds, and they realize that more loot can always be acquired.

That said, balance is important.

Sometimes saving an amazing kit for a specific purpose is the right decision. In HUNGER, you might want to save your absolute best legendary equipment for difficult dungeons or boss fights later on.

But constantly relying on cheap budget loadouts because you’re afraid of losing anything valuable will most certainly hold you back in the long run.

2. Spending Everything Without Thinking Long Term

While gear fear is a problem, the complete opposite can be just as bad.

Bad streaks happen in every extraction game, and if you burn through all your equipment immediately, it doesn’t take long before you’re left with nothing.

Early on, focus on building a healthy supply of weapons, armor, crafting materials, and currency.

You probably don’t need to bring five Ampoules, five armor plates, and multiple stacks of ammunition into every single expedition.

That powerful rifle you just found might also be better saved for a future run when you have stronger armor and better healing items to support it.

Invest in your survival rate, but always think about sustainability.

Personally, I’d rather have enough supplies to survive multiple expeditions than spend everything in one run and end up back at square one.

3. Avoiding PVP For The Wrong Reasons

While HUNGER can be extremely atmospheric and intimidating, mastering PVP is crucial for your long-term survival and progression.

A lot of new players avoid combat entirely because it feels like the safer option.

And sometimes, it absolutely is.

If your backpack is full of valuable items or you’ve completed multiple important objectives, I would be the first person to recommend getting out safely.

But if you avoid every fight purely because you’re scared of losing, you also miss out on the practice needed to become a better player.

We learn by doing, after all.

The gear or quest progress you lose today might give you the experience needed to survive ten other fights in the future.

Finding that balance is one of the most important parts of improving.

4. Fighting Everything That Moves

On the other hand, just because PVP experience is valuable, that doesn’t mean every fight is worth taking.

HUNGER is all about balancing risk versus reward.

If you’re playing solo and come across a far more geared player or a bigger team, especially early in your progression, the odds are heavily stacked against you.

Sometimes the smartest decision is simply letting them pass and focusing on your own objectives.

And if you do decide to engage, try to do it on your own terms.

A well-planned ambush is very different from running straight into a fight you were never likely to win.

5. Getting Greedy And Staying Too Long

One of the easiest ways to lose progress in HUNGER is trying to squeeze too much value out of every expedition.

You complete your mission, find some good loot, start moving toward extraction — and then you see another objective nearby.

“Just one more.”

Sometimes that works.

But every extra minute you stay increases the chance of running into another player, making a mistake, or losing everything you already earned.

And on top of that, the fuller your bag gets, the more time you spend min-maxing value instead of securing what you have.

Consistent successful extractions are often much more valuable than trying to turn every expedition into the perfect run.

6. Ignoring Your Main Objective

Another mistake new players make is getting distracted.

It’s very easy to chase every gunshot, explore every building, or pick up every side objective you come across.

Early on, your priority should usually be completing your missions and extracting with valuable resources.

Get in, finish your objectives, collect useful loot, and get out.

This helps you level faster, improve vendor reputation, and build a much stronger foundation for later in the game.

7. Making Yourself An Easy Target

Looting takes time, and headshots are often instantly lethal, especially early on.

Because of that, always think about where you’re standing before interacting with something.

Looting a barrel or chest in the middle of an open road carries far more risk than looting from inside a building or behind cover.

If you absolutely need something for a mission, sometimes you have to take that risk.

But don’t expose yourself unnecessarily for mediocre loot.

A few seconds of positioning can be the difference between extracting successfully and losing everything.

8. Refusing To Disengage From Bad Fights

HUNGER is incredibly unforgiving.

If you’re caught off guard, heavily damaged, or pinned down in a terrible position, trying to force your way out usually ends badly.

Sometimes the best play is simply creating distance and resetting the fight.

Heal, repair your armor, reposition, and look for a better opportunity.

Retreating can easily feel like a loss, but I can assure you the feeling of getting slammed back into the Chateau feels worse.

Retreating to cover and rethinking the situation can often shift the odds in your favor, or at the very least buy you some time to consider your options.

9. Not Learning From Every Situation

Like every extraction shooter, HUNGER rewards experience just as much as mechanical skill.

Every expedition, every fight, and every decision is an opportunity to improve — regardless of whether you survive or die.

Maybe you won a fight despite making several mistakes. Maybe you made the right decision but still lost because your opponent simply played better.

The important part is understanding what actually led to the outcome.

Did you ignore information you had available? Did you take an unnecessary risk? Did you put yourself in a bad position?

Or did you actually make the correct decision, but things just didn’t go your way?

Don’t judge your gameplay purely based on whether you extracted or not.

The best players are constantly analyzing both their wins and their losses, because every situation carries a learning opportunity.

10. Giving Up Before The Game Opens Up

Finally, one of the biggest mistakes you can make is judging HUNGER too quickly.

Compared to games like Escape from Tarkov, Arena Breakout Infinite, ARC Raiders, or Hunt: Showdown, HUNGER can feel slower and more methodical at first.

But that’s because so much of the experience is built around long-term progression and character development.

As your masteries improve, your equipment gets stronger, your professions level up, and your understanding of the game grows, the experience changes dramatically.

Give it some time, and I suspect you might be surprised how fun it gets.

Because once all of these systems start coming together, HUNGER becomes a very different experience than anything you’ve played before.
