Hi guys, Rex here!
The specter is a pump-action shotgun that comes with three variants.
The regular specter, featuring a long a barrel.
The bayonette, which has a slightly shorter barrel and finally the shorty, which is – well, short.
While the regular specter and the bayonette variant may look very similar, there are some differences.
Because of the shorter barrel, the bayonette variant is generally worse in most aspects, having slightly less damage, lower drop range, a bigger spread and lower velocity.
On the plus side, the bayonette does offer significant melee damage potential.
Finally, the shorty variant takes only 2 slots, meaning you can run it with another 2 slot weapon or as a part of a quartermaster loadout.
The shorty, as you might expect, performs drastically worse than the regular specter in just about every way.
The specter received a buff to it’s cycling speed recently, now matching that of the slate.
The specter can fire regular buckshot, which offers decent penetration power and high damage.
It can also fire 4 special ammo types.
Dragon breath will consistently set enemy hunters on fire up to around 10 meters away, but with multiple hits it will also ignite them at longer distances.
Dragon breath can also be used to burn downed hunters as an alternative to fuses or flares.
The downsides of dragon breath are drastically reduced damage, no penetration power and lower range, giving it far lower kill potential compared to other ammo types.
Next up, flechette ammo inflicts medium bleeding on impact, and the hipfire spread is very tight for this ammo type, making it more accurate on range.
Third, we have pennyshot, which ironically has no pen.
This ammo type has drastically wider spread than regular buckshot and slightly lower damage.
Pennyshot is great for boss killing but otherwise not worth it in my opinion.
Finally, slugs are single large projectiles that offer great damage on longer distances.
Slugs can also headshot, unlike all the other shotgun ammo types.
The specter ejects a bullet every time you reload, so you may want to bring the bullet grubber trait when you’re playing this weapon.
I played the specter for a couple of days, and this video features the best rounds.
I only played the default specter, as it is by far the best variant, and I stuck to buckshot as it is my preferred ammo type for this weapon.
For my sidearm, I played the conversion pistol with FMJ, which offers good penetration power and high kill potential on longer distances at a very low cost.
At the end of this video I’ll share my thoughts and recommendations for the specter, but without further ado, let’s dive into it!
After having played the specter for a couple of days, my opinion on the weapon slightly changed.
For some reason, I have never liked the specter very much, as it has generally performed worse for me compared to other shotguns.
I had a pretty hard time making the weapon work for me during the first games, but as I kept playing the games improved, and towards the end I had multiple great rounds in a short amount of time.
Overall, I’d say the specter is a decent weapon for the price, however I still tend to prefer most other shotguns.
For ammo types, I would recommend buckshot, slugs or flechette based on preference.
Dragonbreath can be useful for lowering player health by burning or charring out their health chunks, but the low damage and range makes it more of a meme as far as I’m concerned.
Pennyshot is never worth it in my opinion, as it is basically just a worse buckshot with the only benefit being high damage to bosses.
I didn’t play the specter shorty, simply because I don’t like it very much.
Overall, the buff to the specter definitely made it a more viable option than before, so you might want to give it a try!
What do YOU think about the specter, and what is your favorite ammo type to run with it? Let me know in the comments, and until next time I’ll see you in the bayou!
