Is Hunt’s Most HATED Rifle TOO POWERFUL?! Avtomat Mastery | Hunt: Showdown 1896

Intro

Hi guys, Rex here. Today we’re diving into one of the most iconic and high-risk weapons in Hunt: Showdown, the Mosin Nagant Avtomat. This long ammo monster brings a brutal combination of full-auto fire and high damage, giving it the power to wipe entire squads in seconds if you can control it. Every tap of the trigger fires a three-round burst, but if you hold it down, the Avtomat switches to full auto, letting you absolutely melt targets in close quarters. It’s fast, loud, risky, and incredibly satisfying when it all clicks.

The Avtomat costs a massive 1250 Hunt Dollars, making it the most expensive weapon in the game, and it comes with just 15 bullets total. That’s one full magazine, and nothing else. With a 75 rounds per minute fire rate and a 0.1 second cycle time, you can run dry in a flash if you’re not careful. Because it’s a modified Mosin, it shares the same internal reload system, but with a twist. Just like the Mosin, reloading before empty ejects a live round, but unlike the Mosin, you can’t cycle reload to avoid that. That makes the Bulletgrubber trait incredibly valuable here. It costs four trait points, but it solves the partial reload issue entirely. And for this gun, that makes a big difference.

One upside is that the Avtomat still benefits from clip reloads. If you’re down five or more bullets and have enough spare ammo, it will reload in fast five round chunks, and even the single round reloads are decently quick. With Bulletgrubber, the reload experience feels surprisingly manageable, especially for a full-auto weapon. The Avtomat supports three ammo types. Default long ammo is what I used for this entire mastery run. It hits hard, penetrates both wood and metal, and is easy to replenish as you gain two rounds from regular ammo boxes and five from deployables or from Scrapbeak drops. Incendiary long ammo sets enemy hunters on fire with the first shot up to 40 meters, and with two shots beyond that range, but has no penetration power and doesn’t offer any meaningful benefit over default, so I skipped it for this challenge. Spitzer ammo gives you extreme velocity at 820 meters per second and lets you hit two targets with a single shot, but lowers damage and increases recoil. Honestly, the Avtomat already kills multiple enemies just fine with default ammo, and cutting your reserves even further didn’t seem worth it.

To deal with the Avtomat’s tight ammo situation, I ran a few different secondaries to increase my total capacity. The most efficient option was pairing it with the Mosin Obrez extended. With Quartermaster, this combo gives you 40 total bullets. And if you empty the Obrez, you can loot more and keep your Avto stocked. The Obrez shares ammo and gives you a solid mid-range backup without needing to burn through your full-auto mag. If I didn’t want to or didn’t have the trait points to run Quartermaster, I used the sparks pistol, which only has one round loaded, but leaves you with a decent amount of spare long ammo for the Avtomat. And during the current event, I made good use of the Gunrunner trait, which lets you equip two three slow weapons. That let me run the Spark Sniper as a long-range option alongside the Avto. I considered the Martini Henry for better ammo reserves, but honestly, the Sparks felt far more comfortable and just fit my play style better. In this video, I’m putting the Avtomat to the test to see how it performs in the current meta. At the end of the video, I’ll give you my thoughts and recommendations. So, stay tuned. But without further ado, let’s dive into it.

Thoughts & Recommendations

After having played the Avtomat for a couple of days, here are my thoughts. Once you learn how to control it, it feels incredibly powerful. The recoil and sway are definitely intense, especially in longer bursts, but I’ve played this weapon before and I know how to handle it. I always crouch before firing to reduce sway, and I drag my mouse downwards during full-auto to manage the vertical recoil. It takes some time getting used to if you’re new to the gun, but once you get it down, you can consistently spray down enemies at mid-range, which I pulled off quite a few times during this challenge. Bulletgrubber was incredibly useful when I had the trait points for it, but I couldn’t always afford to take it, especially when I needed to prioritize other things like Quartermaster or other essential traits. That said, on the matches where I did manage to grab it, it definitely helped make the reload system a lot more forgiving.

In terms of loadouts, the one I liked the most was actually Gunrunner plus Sparks Sniper. That combo felt incredibly flexible and I could dominate in close quarters with the Avto and then pick off players at long range with the Sparks. It gave me the tools for every range, and it felt super smooth to run. That said, it’s tied to the current event, so unless Gunrunner returns in a future update, it’s not a long-term option. Ammo management was definitely the hardest part of this challenge. I often had to loot dead players long ammo weapons just to refill. One trick I used a lot, if you loot a long ammo gun like a Sparks and then switch back to the Avtomat, you’ll keep any spare ammo left on the weapon. My teammates helped out too, sometimes dropping a Sparks pistol so I could take their backup ammo before switching back. And they even brought ammo boxes to keep me stocked between fights. Overall, I had great success with the Avtomat, but I’ll admit part of that comes from having experience with it already, and from other shooters where recoil control is a big part of the skill curve. This isn’t a gun you can just point and shoot. It really rewards players who put in the time to master its rhythm and pacing. Used properly it’s not just playable, it’s terrifying. It’s expensive and risky, but if you respect the weapon, build around it, and learn how to tame the recoil, the Avtomat absolutely delivers.

But now, I want to hear your opinion on the Avtomat. Is it too powerful, and does it fit in with the rest of the arsenal in Hunt Showdown? Let me know in the comments – and until next time, I’ll see you in the Bayou.
