Hi guys Rex here!
The crossbow is a Special ammo weapon that comes with two main variants: the regular crossbow and the Deadeye.
The available ammo types are regular ammo, explosive bolts, shot bolts and steel bolts.
Regular bolts deal a lot of damage and apply severe bleeding on impact, which adds a ton of pressure and often leads to the target bleeding out shortly after getting hit.
Explosive bolts explode on impact and deal damage in a small area.
Shot bolts trigger a buckshot on impact which will one shot to the chest or legs on any range. Similar to regular buckshot, the shot bolt effect can penetrate surfaces and even small trees. Both shot bolts and explosive bolts drop heavier than regular bolts.
Steel bolts have a higher velocity and drop range than the other ammo types but less damage than regular bolts, making them best suited for accurate shots on range.
There is currently one crossbow trait in the game; bolt thrower, which reduces the reloading time. It is highly recommended to take this trait when possible.
I played the regular crossbow and the deadeye variant for a couple of days, and this video features the best rounds.
I primarily played the combination of half shot bolt and half regular ammo as I find this to be the strongest option overall, and I brought an ammo box to refill from since you can’t retrieve shot bolts the way you retrieve regular bolts.
For my sidearm I primarily played the Scottfield Spitfire, but any pistol would work for this loadout.
At the end of this video I’ll share my thoughts and recommendations for the crossbow – but without further ado, let’s dive into it!
After having played the crossbow for couple of days, I have to say it’s always fun to come back to this weapon.
I’ve played a good amount of crossbow in the past, but not so much recently, so this was a nice change of pace.
As expected, the combination of shot bolt and regular bolts performed the best overall.
I didn’t play steel bolts simply because I don’t think the damage reduction is worth it for the extra velocity based on previous experience.
Explosive bolts are fun to play but not the strongest option for solo gameplay in my opinion, as you tend to need a follow-up shot to finish off wounded enemies.
Even though I mostly played the regular crossbow, the Deadeye variant is a ton of fun and definitely very viable.
Since the hip fire accuracy is very good with the crossbow you don’t need to scope in close range to land accurate shots, but you still have the scope for distance when you need it.
What is YOUR favorite crossbow loadout? Let me know in the comments, and until next time I’ll see you in the Bayou
